Since the days of the ancient Ute Indians, the Gunnison River region has played host to a number of colorful legends, including frontier settlers, gold prospectors, outlaws, cowboys and today's legends - the outdoor enthusiasts.
    
  
Gunnison was named after John W. Gunnison, who first discovered the area in his government assigned quest to recommend the best route for a railroad across the Colorado Rockies. Gunnison County boomed in the 1870s with the rise in mining.
  
Gunnison became the official county seat in 1877. In 1880 the railroad arrived. By 1883 the bust had come and half of the population left. It seems area ore mining was over-hyped because the ore veins turned out to be shallow and low producing. Even so, Gunnison was always the hub of enterprise for the area.

More and more people are discovering the beauty and tranquility of this central Rocky Mountain destination where hundreds of miles of trails offer varied hiking, biking, jeeping and horseback riding.
    
  Gunnison is located on the Western Slope of Colorado, only about 30 miles from the Continental Divide, at the confluence of the Gunnison and Tomichi rivers.
  
The town is centrally located between two premier ski resorts - Monarch and Crested Butte. Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest body of water, is only 6 miles to the west.
